were you surprised by the low energy of chuck hagel today on the stand? many people felt he was coached by whoever coached barack obama on his first debate. >> well, you know it reminded me of the joke of the corpse at the wake, that is not to get in the way of drinking and remembering. this is a strange combination of meet the parents and a job interfere where you got to be sure to be unobjectionable, and you have to work with these same people who are berating you to make your tenture a success and you know these hearings are more about them getting a sound bite for their district back home with their interests or their nuclear weapons plan in it, and they're unfortunately not so much about educating anybody on serious issues that we face. so from that perspective senator hagel's demeanor was entirely understandable, and i can't even begin to imagine how incredibly it mustfrustrating it must have been for him. heather hurlburt and david schuster. be will he be confirmed? >> he'll be confirmed. >> john: welcome back to "viewpoint." and its time for the t

i think chuck hagel's not the person that should be advising him, when chuck hagel was one that didn't even support sanctions against iran. when it opened discussions with iran, and in his book, implies that a nuclear-armed iran would maybe be more responsible. and i just can't see that, when you see the statements made by ahmadinejad, at the united nations, about israel's merely ability to exist. >> the senate as a whole has not rejected a cabinet nominee since 1989. it was george h.w. bush's nomination of john tower. it was a secretary of defense, but these were questions of personal and ethical conduct that derailed that. before that, you had to go back to 1959 and eisenhower to find someone else. do you think the senate will actually reject hagel? >> i think it's too early to tell. so many senators that i talked to, erin, said that the hearings would be consequential, and what i heard today was a senator, a former senator, who seemed uncomfortable on that side of the table, answering questions, when in the past, he was on the other side of the table, much more comfortable, when he

this was a debacle for chuck hagel today. if his nomination is defeated, we'll look back and say this was the place where it went down in flames. not only was he not able to defend many of his earlier statements, but he demonstrated a lack of command over the subject matter that he would be responsible for if confirmed. he couldn't identify what the obama administration's policy was. i think one of the telling exchanges changes when he first said that he supported containing a nuclear iran. someone hands him and a note and reads the note, i guess i misspoke. we don't have a policy on containing a nuclear iran and senator levin has to tell him, we do have a policy. we're not in favor of containment. we want to prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon in the first place. the senator hagel can't even get that right, i think it really left his supporters on that committee very shaken about the case they now have to make. >> greta: he seemed woefully ill prepared. it was he was anti-israel and made the statement in the 12 years
